Collabrations

Medieval education collaboration projects are welcomed! We have a few concepts worked out, and we would love to work on some of them. An example of the type of project we are contemplating is below.

VELS project:
One of the new innovations in the education curriculum is the introduction of VELS, which encourages cross and multi-disciplinary approaches to education. The Medieval education syllabus is ideally placed to create an entire syllabus of learning connected by the common thread of studying the Middle Ages.

Imagine a syllabus where each student individually and in groups works towards a grand finale of a Medieval Day. Medieval clothing is researched and constructed. A feast is planned, some of the food grown in the school gardens using medieval agricultural tools and techniques (some of the tools could be made by the students, too) and cooked and served as a highlight of the final day. Music students learn and perform medieval songs and music. Drama students study and perform a medieval mummer or morality play. Students read Chaucer, Mallory and other medieval writers and recite passages. LoTE students study what the life and history of the country of the language they are learning in the Middle Ages. In Sports medieval games and sports are played (did you know that rounders is a medieval game?). Geography students learn about how borders and maps change (the history of cartography is fascinating as a separate study!), and how natural resources are important in how and where people live. Environmental science students can learn how sustainable life was a necessity in the Middle Ages, and how people ensured that resources were not depleted by careful management (for example, copsing of trees). Maths and science students can work on the physics of a trebuchet, or hold a competition that accounts for average (mean, mode and median) distances and accuracy of the scale seige engines they have made. Chemistry experiments can make a great "alchemical" display. All the time, media students record the progress in videos, and a website documents the course of the year.
