Why choose an incursion?

Incursions represent the best value for money, with the added benefit of organisational simplicity. Days of Knights comes to you with all the equipment (a trailer full, as it happens!) to present what has been called the leading medieval educational experience students can have. All you need to provide is 3 classrooms, a larger space for the Tourney and supervising staff.

With an incursion you don't have to pay for buses (at one school we did recently that saved $10 per student). You don't have to lose the time in marshalling students, travelling to and from the excursion site and wrangling students in unfamiliar territory.

The students enjoy the medieval experience in familiar surroundings, which allows them to more easily focus on learning and having fun with the day.

You have far more flexibility with organising staff to be present, and not having to lose several staff members for a whole day.

As the event takes place on your school's property you are far less likely to "lose" students to those attractions that seem far more appealing at the time than the curriculum focused activity organised for them.

Other students, especially the Year 7 students, who will be studying medieval history the following year (in most cases) can begin to get excited by osmosis (through glimpses of the activities, talking to friends and siblings experiencing the day and exposure to in school publicity).

We have found that the students spend their breaks chatting about what they have been doing, and as no two presentations ever are the same, in the familiar setting of their own school's grounds, they further the educational benefits of the day.

An incursion allows far greater scope to access the VELS and create a cross-disciplinary learning environment. Students can make props and costume, prepare a medieval feast, learn medieval songs and music and perform them, put on a medieval morality or mummer play, have readings of Chaucer, or other medieval stories and texts, learn "alchemy" in science and lots more. Even though the subject is medieval history, they can film the day for media, or make a web site about the Middle Ages and the day's excitement.

Simply put, an incursion makes life easier all around for your dedicated and hard-working staff. We're happy to discuss with you how best to make the day work for you and offer your students the best possible environment for maximising their enjoyment and learning on the day. Medieval education doesn't come any simpler than Days of Knights!
