Medieval education history - Playing kubbMedieval education history - Spinning thread using a drop spindle

Days of Knights offers:

Journey with a noble lady and her attendants as she travels from her manor, through the farmlands, to the town to watch the greatest spectacle of the Middle Ages, a tournament. Along the way, we meet a peasant, an entertainer, a craftsperson, and knights.

The session includes the children :

  • learning skills like spinning yarn, making chain maille, weaving and wheat grinding
  • participating in juggling and entertaining
  • play medieval games like Tug of War, novelty races and Kubb (a traditional Swedish game of skill)
  • practicing courtly manners by learning to reverence (a medieval bow), dance or sing
  • making and handling armor
  • watching knights fight in tournament style with real steel swords

We examine many facets of medieval life, including:

  • Housing
  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Social Class
  • Work
  • Entertainments
  • Social Structure and government
  • Health
  • Crafts
  • Pageantry
  • The Tournament

The journey is run as an interactive story, with the children actually getting up and trying new things, hands on, under the supervision of our staff. It's a unique, wonderful introduction to the Middle Ages from the company described as being Australia's premier medieval education organisation.

What we bring, and what we need from you

Days of Knights come to you with everything they need to create the ambience and learning environment for your students.

A space such as a courtyard or oval is ideal for the activities. As many of the activities involve running around or need space for movement a clear area is essential. If the weather is likely to be inclement, a sheltered alternative to an outdoor venue such as a gym or theatre, is requested for the comfort of the students.

We require that a member of staff be present during the session. As an interactive display, students are required to obey all instructions from the Days of Knights staff. Students may not pick up or attempt to use any of the equipment except with explicit permission and with direct supervision. Questions are welcomed at any time, but they must be relevant and the needs of the rest of the students will be taken into account if the session appears to be getting off track at all.
